Cutting the tall tiered and layered cakes
Here are several types of tall cakes, often celebrated for their impressive height and layered design. The two most common among tall cakes are the layered cakes and the tiered cakes. This article will display the process of cutting a layered or a tiered cake 4 easy steps:
The difference between cutting a tall layered cake and a tall tiered cake is separating the tiers, as tiered cakes are commonly made up of layered cakes stacked up on each other through elaborate cake decorating tools and mechanisms.
Step 1: Remove all dowels and decorations
Before you start cutting carefully remove all cake decorations, dowels and figurines from your cake.
Step 2: Tall Tiered Cake Separation
Take a clean cake spatula and slide it under the top tier of your cake. You may wear a glove to stabilize the cake from one side while moving it to the side with the help of the spatula.
Generally cake tiers will have a thin cake board underneath them. Your spatula should slide in underneath the cake board of the tier you are separating.
Step 3: Cutting a tall cake
Things you’ll need to cut a tall layered cake:
- A plain chopping board with a large surface area.
- A long cake cutting knife or a chef’s knife.
- Keep hot water ready to warm the knife if cutting a cake straight from the refrigerator.
- Keep a tea-towel handy to clean the knife for big cakes.
Keep the chopping board on the side of the cake from where you intend to start cutting.
If the cake is straight from the refrigerator, warm your knife in hot water and clean it with a dry tea-towel before you start cutting.
Slide your knife downwards in one slice and move the cut side of the cake on to the chopping board. Now cut the vertically in 4 or more slices before cutting them horizontally to your desired serving size. Hint: Party slices are generally 1 inch by 2 inch in size.
Finally, we all love a clean slice of cake that has been served with the love. Your cake will bring joy to all those who’ll be lucky to taste it!
